Unit Nurse Manager

Overview

Opened in 1973, ArchCare at Ferncliff Nursing Home is located on 36 beautiful acres of the former Astor family estate just outside the historic village of Rhinebeck. Our goal is to provide the best possible practice through holistic care that addresses not only the residents' physical needs, but their social, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs as well.

As part of the management team,under the direction of the DON/ADON, the Unit Manager, RN is responsible for planning, directing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating nursing care for a specific unit during her/his tour of duty.

It is also her/his responsibility to be expertise of the established State and Federal Regulations and approve standards of patient care, in addition to established house policies and procedures: ensuring accurate interpretation and compliance.

Responsibilities

   » Coordinates the care of Residents through collaboration with other departments.
   » Coordinates Residents' appointments.
   » Completes MDS assessments according to schedule (may delegate to a Registered Nurse upon approval of the Director of Nursing) and serves as the facilitator at CCP team meetings.
   » Adjusts Resident's plan of care as needed.
   » Informs the physician of the Resident's status monthly and as needed.
   » Responds to emergencies involving the Resident or unit.
   » Communicates with families regarding the Resident's plan of care and any changes in the condition of the Resident.
   » Promotes positive public relations for the nursing unit, department and Home.
   » Receives and communicates information to the staff and keeps Director of Nursing/adjunct Director of Nursing informed of needs and current developments.
   » Adjusts section assignments and evaluates workloads after consultation with Registered Nurse on the unit.
   » Evaluates rotation of staff and consults with Director of Nursing/ adjunct Director of Nursing.
   » Supervises the RN, LPN, and NA trainees during the orientation period and/or delegates this responsibility to the Shift manager or Registered Nurse on the designated shift.
   » Completes the performance appraisals of RN's and LPN's, collaborating with the Shift managers on appraisals for evening and night shifts.
   » Conducts monthly staff meetings and other meetings as needed, on all shifts and attends monthly staff meetings with the Director of Nursing/adjunct Director of Nursing.
   » Assists with progressive discipline of staff and takes disciplinary action as needed.
   » Conducts nursing (quality) rounds monthly and as needed on all shifts.
   » Participates in the Quality Assurance Program by monitoring systems, services and expertise through auditing and evaluating results, and provides written reports of a plan of correction to be approved by the Director of Nursing.
   » Assigns staff to inservices and meetings with the assistance of the Registered Nurse on the individual shifts.
   » Evaluates new equipment with the assistance of the Registered Nurse and/or Shift manager.
   » Educates staff, supervises the implementation of new policies and procedures and periodically reviews current procedures, working in collaboration with the Director of Staff Development as needed.
   » Monitors the needs of the unit, including but not limited to supplies and linens.
   » Discusses new ideas, procedures, products or concerns with the Director of Nursing/adjunct Director of Nursing prior to implementation.
   » Informs staff of and enforces policies and procedures as they relate to the Nursing Department.
   » Ensures unit compliance with New York State and other agency regulations.
   » Performs other tasks as required or directed.

Qualifications

Graduate of state approved school of nursing.

Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in New York State.

1+ years management practice. Prior experiense as Charge Nurse or Nurse manager a plus.

Previous practice as Staff Nurse and Charge Nurse in which administrative, managery and leadership abilities abilities have been demonstrated. Advanced education desirable.
